A Local’s Guide to Public Transit in Vancouver
Tony Fang

Getting around Vancouver without a car is completely doable—if you know how to work the system. This guide breaks down everything you need to know about using public transit in the city, based on real local experience.

Transit Overview:

  • System Name: TransLink
  • Modes: Buses, SkyTrain (Expo, Millennium, Canada Lines), SeaBus, West Coast Express
  • Main App: TransLink app + Google Maps (both are reliable)

Step 1: Get a Compass Card

Pick one up at SkyTrain stations or major retailers (London Drugs). It’s your reloadable pass for all transit services. Load it online or via app.

Step 2: Understand the Zones (And When They Matter)

  • Weekdays before 6:30 p.m.: Fares are zone-based (1, 2, or 3)
  • Evenings & Weekends: One-zone fare across the board!

Step 3: Timing is Everything

  • Buses can be early or late—plan to be 3-5 minutes early.
  • SkyTrains run frequently, every 2-5 mins in peak times.

Step 4: Bus Etiquette

  • Don’t crowd the door.
  • Acknowledge the driver (locals always say thanks).
  • Offer seats to seniors or people with strollers—it’s the Vancouver way.

Step 5: Watch for the 99 B-Line and RapidBuses

The 99 B-Line is legendary (and packed). New RapidBus lines offer faster service with fewer stops—watch for the “R” numbers.

Pro Tips:

  • Tap out on SkyTrain/SeaBus to avoid max fare charges.
  • If you're by the water, the SeaBus is both scenic and fast.
  • Avoid rush hour unless you love human sardines.
